Belgian Waffle

Poem by George Duric-Last - Photograph by Ally Bain

Does life taste sweeter
With a cherry on top?
To see through the sparkle
Of sickly mind
And sugar-glazed eyes
At a trifle of woes
Life serves in front of you.

Is English love even English
If you do not take her
For Afternoon tea?
Stained lace and rusted tray;
We can be Lord and Lady for the day.
Stack the fairies high
In their colourful plenty,
Whip the insolent flakes
And sponge the drying conversation.
I love curd, and she love tea.

Can you say you have been to Belgium,
Paris or Denmark,
When you have not wrapped your fingers
Around sludgy frost and past pastries?
When you never ran your lips over
The pool of deep jam and nut nectar?
Coin and health are problems
Of a life removed from such delights.

Let your senses take might
And your tongue drown in a
Sea of flavour.
You, me, cream of the crop
One more coco drop
Cloud of cotton
Flight of fancy
Slice or wedge
Crust or crumb
Belgian waffle
Summer sun

This is what love looks like
Waiter we’re done.
