Carrying Fire

Poem by George Duric-Last - Photograph by Ally Bain

Fire.
How fickle the feeling
To be filled with burning need.
Need to save property
Or life, to gather loving bones
Among charcoal and ash.
The need to pace, breathe,
Stand, and watch Disaster paint.

Fire.
Taking floor beneath your feet
During a dance in darkened rooms
When incendiary roses climbed
Hollow walls and screaming wood
Created scenes of beautiful danger.

Don the suit of amber and smoke
And look for the partner in red.
Let one brave act
Keep paper angels on high ceilings,
And the waters to flow
And put out the fires we carry.

Fire.
How fickle the feeling,
To touch finger to flame.
Not able to forget
The fires we carry.
