Pencil and Paper

Poem by George Duric-Last - Photograph by Ally Bain

How does it feel
To put pencil to paper?
To give ravaged forests
The sweet kiss of led,
To turn a page fresh
Like past rips and smudge
Were from a feeling or tale
Not realised. But re-done
Better and worthy of display.

It is a feeling felt, an action made
Whether measured and still
Or rough and played.
Smiles and gratitude float away
Like fibres the page cannot hold,
All that is left
Are the scars the artist show you.

Sit on the frayed stool,
Toss him a tarnished tuppence
An have your soul laid bare
In portrait or scrap;
Fashion that photo cannot form.
The drawing shows you
What the world has seen
Since the figure was born.

Pray that bladed graphite
And splintered easel
Is kind to soft skin
That wrinkles in light,
And frail soul
That shivers
At judgements might.

Alright,
Begin.
