Passing it Back

'You're a lad' he said.
'Lads like football!
They don't waste their time with arty-farty stuff!
They take every bit of fatherly advice,
And they never kick it back' he always told me.

His words hemmed in and cornered me,
I no longer found song or romantic comfort
In the green pastures that stretched before me.
A dream of youth had blossomed and had now
Progressed to higher charts; to be set in stone
And rise to meet his approval.

Me and other pale boys kneeled
Down in the mud, come rain or blaze,
This is where champions are made;
Right here in this dirty earth,
That clings to my body, my face
Too much that I can no longer see myself.

'Yes! Go on my son!
Get in there, I know you will do it!
Shoot. Score. Win, win, win
You're my son!'

Stop. Blow the whistle and bury the flags.
Let the shrubs and trees grow in silent fields.
Dear father, how I could have been more
Than the irrational statements you roar,
How I could have stared into the clouded future
Absent glancing back in reverence
At the cheap, faceless cup that glints on our mantle.

O will I take another opportunity
To let you win a tenner,
Down a pint and get a light?
No. When my comrade passes me the ball,
I will break the chain and pass it back.
