A Soul Folded

Summer of 69

We cut through the back woods
Of the Harrison farm,
Jumped over the rock fence
Under Mr Jenkins' barn.
Made love beneath the oak, made a downwind
Turn to the Pawnee Bridge and ran into town;
Raced that train to the tracks without slowing down.

Remember a day;
The thoughts were short, the hair was long,
Caught somewhere between a boy and man.
When the trees had to be saved, when love came free;
Life spread out as far as the eye could see.
Hot moonlit nights rolling around in the hay.

As the numberless leaves fall
And the wind becomes stronger time after time,
Material has more worth with its soft happy touch;
A pocketful of coins is a comfortable weight.
Familiar girls escape to the city,
I find me, fix up a place,
Fill a pair of old boots, answer the cows restless calls.

I've been at it a long time
Working on that bottom line.
Staring at the gathering swallows in the sky,
Tweeting and fluttering in the summer high.
One of these days I'm going to jump off that shelf
And hit the ground running,
At least that's what I keep telling myself.

Busted hands and broken land,
White gold turns to sand,
Whisky is the only well that runs deep.
It's barely getting by and really getting on
And it's hard to turn a wrench on a rusty bolt
But someday, the structure will give...
